Junior Zoo Keeper Camp is a unique and exciting ‘educational adventure’ for young people 8 years and older. This week long, day camp offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for a behind the scenes look at the workings of a Zoo. Everything from conservation, habitat and behavior to feeding, meeting the zoo babies and unique photo moments are packed into this unforgettable week of fun.
With supervised daily busing from Orleans, each camp has a limited registration of 20 Junior Zoo Keepers per camp. The trained camp councilors show the Junior Zoo Keepers some of the many facets to the working of a zoo, that it is not just a collection of animals, but a ‘modern arc’ that will preserve many of the world’s endangered species.
Everyday the campers conduct their own ‘Zoo Check’ and prepare the food for, with the aid of a Keeper, feed some of the omnivores and primates at the zoo. They also have their own special animals to take care of in a part of the zoo that is not open to the public. The popularity of the camp and the return of some campers for their fourth year, led to the Level II and Level III camps being added, with some going on to work at the Zoo
The ‘Graduation’ ceremony at the end of the camp is a wonderful conclusion to the week. Each camper receives a certificate of participation, a lifetime membership to the Zoo and their place as a graduate on the very elite Junior Zoo Keeper ‘Wall of Fame’. Then their first job as a ‘Junior Zoo Keeper’ is to give their families a guided tour of the Zoo and show you just what they have been up to for the past week.
Junior Zoo Keeper Camp really is an ‘educational adventure’ that creates memories and friendships that will last a life time!
